At the end of 2013, my dear friend Effie was getting married. At the time, I had shown an interest in photographing people and she so kindly invited me to be a second-photographer on her wedding day.
Hers was the first wedding I ever photographed and back then, I never knew how that experience would change my course forever.
Almost four years and countless weddings later, I return to the home of Effie and her husband Savvas, this time to meet for the first time, their baby boy. He was every bit as divine as I would have imagined – with all the good nature and warm heart of his mother and father.
Motherhood looked beautiful on Effie. She sat on the floor and rocked Emmanuel to sleep in his nursery, exhausted but every bit as stunning as on her wedding day. At one point, she threw her head back laughing and I was taken back to that day, when everything lay before her and Savvas, and she laughed so freely, so joyfully, throughout. Here she was again, baby in arms, with that same unguarded joy.
I am lucky to call Effie my friend. I am thankful for the opportunity that was afforded me all that time ago and I will always remain in awe at how when you least expect it, people can enter your lives and have the most profound impact on your destiny.
Effie, Savvas – I may not see you both now as often as I’d like, but you – and now your little boy – will always, always be in my heart.
