There is nothing I love more than couples who do a wedding their own way. They’re not governed by tradition, they’re not governed by pressure or expectation. Instead, they follow their hearts and what is a fierce certainty of what matters most. They do it their way.
Enter Britt and Jack, who planned a truly unique weekend wedding event. In wanting to achieve the best of both worlds between intimate ceremony but big celebrations after, they held a small, private ceremony on the Friday and a big, fantastic party with friends and family the following evening.
Oh, and did I mentioned that those attending on the Saturday night were doing so on the pretence that they were celebrating Britt and Jack’s engagement! Surprise!
Their intimate ceremony took place on the stunning hideaway lawn of the City Botanic, witnessed by 24 of their nearest and dearest on a crisp autumn afternoon. As a wedding photographer, you witness the most amazing, life-changing moments and some moments in particular, really stay with you. I don’t think I will ever forget running towards the sound of the bagpipes which marked the bride’s arrival, before seeing Britt in her stunning ivory hand-beaded dress, arm in arm with her Dad, being led down the botanic lawn by a piper and her girls.
It was as emotional as it was incredible.
After the ceremony and as the sun began to descend behind the palms, the newlyweds spent time with their guests. The family portraits taken at this time were so much more than just a tick-box item on the photography to-do list – they were an opportunity to see how these two families connected, loved, laughed and celebrated. Though the sun was getting low, soon to be hidden by the skyscrapers of the city, I knew just how special those present were to my couple. This was not a time to rush things along.
The next evening, guests filled Darling & Co. Paddington to enjoy Britt and Jack’s “engagement” party. I had to drum up all the skills I learnt in my Grade 10 drama class to pretend I was meeting family and close friends for the very first time. Shortly into the event, Britt snuck away from her party, put on her wedding dress again and for one more time, was led to meet her Jack on the arm of her Dad.
Cue gasps, cheers, squeals and many, many happy tears!
Britt, Jack – congratulations on pulling off your dream wedding. It really was, the best of both worlds. This is your story xx
I started capturing Britt and Jack's story back in February, when I met them amongst the pines for their engagement shoot. Engagement sessions are complimentary with all wedding collections and a fantastic way to get to know one another and take some time out as a couple in a beautiful location. I'm currently taking 2018 wedding bookings so if you want to learn more about my collections, just drop me a line today. I'd love to hear from you.
